How to Write an Engineering Resume

Engineering hiring managers want to see a strong foundation of technical skills paired with demonstrated project outcomes. They look for experience with industry-standard software tools, relevant certifications like PE or FE, and evidence of problem-solving abilities. Safety awareness, regulatory compliance, and cross-functional collaboration are highly valued. Projects with quantified cost savings, efficiency gains, or timeline improvements stand out.

Include keywords specific to your engineering discipline: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MATLAB, FEA, and GD&T for mechanical engineers; circuit design, PCB layout, and embedded systems for electrical engineers; structural analysis, site planning, and building codes for civil engineers. Universal engineering keywords include project management, root cause analysis, lean manufacturing, quality control, and technical documentation. Always list your PE, FE, or EIT certification status.

Use a clean, technical layout with a dedicated skills section organized by category. Lead with your most relevant experience and place certifications prominently. Include a "Projects" section if you have notable engineering projects that demonstrate your capabilities. Quantify everything: cost reductions, efficiency improvements, project budgets, and team sizes. Keep the resume to one page for early-career engineers, two pages for senior engineers.

Do not list software tools without showing project context. Avoid generic descriptions like "designed components" — instead specify what you designed, what constraints you worked under, and what the outcome was. Many engineers undervalue their soft skills; make sure to highlight leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and client communication. Do not forget to include patents, publications, or conference presentations if applicable.
