How to Write a Finance & Accounting Resume

Finance hiring managers prioritize professional certifications (CPA, CFA, Series 7/63), technical proficiency with financial modeling tools, and evidence of sound judgment with significant dollar amounts. They want to see that you can analyze data, manage risk, and communicate financial insights to stakeholders. Regulatory knowledge and compliance experience are increasingly important in this field.

Include keywords such as financial modeling, forecasting, budgeting, GAAP, IFRS, variance analysis, risk management, and financial reporting. Mention software proficiency with Excel (advanced), Bloomberg Terminal, SAP, QuickBooks, or Oracle Financials. For investment roles, highlight valuation, DCF analysis, M&A, and portfolio management. Always list relevant certifications prominently.

Finance resumes should be conservative and clean — this is not the field for creative layouts. Use a reverse-chronological format with clear section headings. Place certifications and licenses in a dedicated section near the top. Quantify everything: portfolio sizes managed, cost savings achieved, revenue impact, and budget responsibilities. Use dollar figures and percentages to demonstrate the scale of your work.

Do not bury your certifications at the bottom of the resume — CPA, CFA, and other credentials should be immediately visible. Avoid listing software skills without demonstrating how you used them to add value. Many finance candidates forget to quantify their impact; instead of "prepared financial reports," write "Prepared monthly financial reports for $200M revenue division, identifying $3.5M in cost-saving opportunities." Do not include outdated or irrelevant certifications.
