Resume Skills Section: What to Include & How to Format It

Why Your Skills Section Matters for ATS

Your skills section is one of the first things an ATS scans. It's where the system looks for exact keyword matches against the job description. A well-crafted skills section can be the difference between a 60% and a 90% ATS score.

Hard Skills vs Soft Skills

Hard skills are technical, teachable abilities: Python, SQL, Adobe Photoshop, financial modeling, CPR certification. These are what ATS systems primarily scan for. Soft skills are interpersonal abilities: leadership, communication, problem-solving, teamwork. While important, they're less impactful for ATS because they're generic and hard to verify. Rule of thumb: Your skills section should be 80% hard skills, 20% soft skills. Focus on the technical competencies that match the job description.

How to Format Your Skills Section

Option 1: Simple List (Best for ATS)

Technical Skills: Python, JavaScript, React, Node.js, PostgreSQL, AWS, Docker, Git

This format is clean, scannable, and ATS-friendly. Group related skills together.

Option 2: Categorized Skills (Best for Readability)

  • Programming: Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, SQL
  • Frameworks: React, Next.js, Django, Express
  • Cloud & DevOps: AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD
  • Tools: Git, Jira, Figma, Postman
  • This works well when you have 15+ skills across different categories.

Option 3: Skills with Proficiency (Use Sparingly)

Only rate your proficiency if the job asks for it. Avoid star ratings or progress bars — ATS can't read them. Instead use: "Advanced: Python, React | Intermediate: Go, Rust"

Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, React, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, SQL, Git, Agile, CI/CD, REST APIs, GraphQL, machine learning

    Common Mistakes

  • Listing skills you don't have — You'll be tested in interviews
  • Using outdated skills — Remove jQuery if you know React; remove Windows XP
  • Ignoring the job description — Mirror the exact terms they use
  • Using only acronyms — Include both "Search Engine Optimization" and "SEO"
