STAR Method FAQ

What is the STAR method in interviews?+

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. It's a structure recruiters and hiring managers use to evaluate behavioral interview answers — they want a concrete past example with a specific outcome, not a hypothetical. Most Fortune 500 + FAANG behavioral interviews score candidates explicitly on STAR completeness.

How long should a STAR answer be?+

60-90 seconds spoken. Interviewers tune out after ~2 minutes. This tool deliberately caps each STAR section at 2-3 sentences so your full answer lands in the right zone.

Should I say 'I' or 'we' in a STAR answer?+

'I' — explicitly. Interviewers listen for this. 'We' makes them think you're hiding behind the team. The Action section especially should be 'I led', 'I built', 'I aligned' — not 'we worked on'. This tool defaults to 'I' phrasing.

What if I don't have an exact metric for the Result?+

Use a reasonable approximation and flag it as such ('reduced incident response time by roughly 30%'). Interviewers care more that you tracked outcomes than that you remembered the exact number. The tool will inject a flagged approximation if your raw story doesn't include one.
