How to Write a Construction & Trades Resume

Construction hiring managers prioritize safety certifications, trade licenses, and demonstrated project experience. They want to see that you can deliver projects on time and within budget while maintaining impeccable safety records. Experience with specific construction methods, equipment, and building codes relevant to the position is essential. OSHA certifications and trade-specific licenses (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) are often required before an interview.

Include keywords such as OSHA 10/30, blueprint reading, project estimation, safety compliance, building codes, quality inspection, subcontractor management, scheduling (Primavera, Microsoft Project), and cost control. For specific trades, add relevant certifications and skills: journeyman or master electrician license, plumbing codes, welding certifications (AWS), or heavy equipment operation. Include any union memberships and apprenticeship completions.

Use a straightforward, no-frills format with clear section headings. Lead with your certifications and licenses — these are your most important qualifications. Include a "Projects" section highlighting notable completions with project values, square footage, and team sizes. Quantify safety records (days without incident), budget performance (under-budget percentages), and schedule adherence. Keep the resume to one page for tradespeople, up to two pages for project managers and superintendents.

Do not omit your certifications and safety training — OSHA, trade licenses, and equipment certifications should be front and center. Avoid vague descriptions like "worked on construction sites" without specifying project types, sizes, and your role. Many construction professionals undervalue their leadership experience; if you managed crews, specify team sizes and the results you achieved. Do not forget to include equipment and technology proficiency.
