How to Write an Education Resume

Education recruiters and hiring committees evaluate candidates on their teaching philosophy, student achievement data, classroom management approaches, and curriculum development experience. They want evidence that you can engage diverse learners, integrate technology, and collaborate with colleagues and parents. State teaching certifications and endorsements are non-negotiable for most K-12 positions.

Include keywords such as curriculum development, differentiated instruction, classroom management, student assessment, IEP/504 plans, educational technology, standardized testing, and parent communication. For higher education, add research, grant writing, and academic advising. Mention specific tools like Google Classroom, Canvas, Blackboard, or SMART Board technology. List all teaching certifications with endorsement areas.

Education resumes should lead with certifications and teaching credentials, followed by teaching experience in reverse-chronological order. Include a brief teaching philosophy statement or professional summary at the top. Quantify student outcomes wherever possible — test score improvements, graduation rates, and program participation. For academic positions, you may use a CV format with sections for publications, conference presentations, and grants.

Avoid listing only job duties without showing impact. Instead of "taught 10th grade English," write "Taught 10th grade English to 120 students across 4 sections, improving average state assessment scores by 18%." Do not omit technology skills — school districts increasingly value digital literacy. Avoid generic cover letter language on the resume itself. Make sure to include professional development and continuing education hours.
