Consulting firms — especially MBB (McKinsey, BCG, and Bain) — have some of the most specific resume requirements in any industry. A resume that works perfectly for tech or finance may be immediately rejected by a consulting recruiter.

The consulting resume format has remained remarkably consistent over the decades. Here is exactly what top firms expect.

The Non-Negotiable Rules

One Page Only

This is absolute. Even candidates with 15+ years of experience must fit everything on one page. No exceptions for MBB.

Education First

Unlike most industries, consulting resumes lead with education — especially for candidates from target schools. Include:

  • University name, degree, and graduation date
  • GPA if 3.5+ (some firms have a hard 3.5 cutoff)
  • Relevant honors, scholarships, and activities
  • Study abroad or exchange programs
  • Reverse Chronological

    Every section must be in reverse chronological order. No functional or hybrid formats.

    Header

    Name centered at top in a slightly larger font. Contact info (email, phone, LinkedIn) on one line below.

    Font and Spacing

  • Use a professional serif or sans-serif font (Times New Roman, Calibri, or Garamond)
  • Font size 10-11pt for body, 12-14pt for name
  • Margins of 0.5-0.75 inches

    Each role should have 3-4 bullet points maximum. Every single bullet must follow this structure: Action verb + what you did + quantified result

    What Consulting Firms Look For

    Leadership

    Every bullet should demonstrate leadership at some level — leading teams, initiatives, projects, or organizations.

    Impact

    Quantified, business-relevant results. Revenue, cost savings, efficiency gains, growth percentages.

    Analytical Thinking

    Show you can break down complex problems. Mention frameworks, data analysis, and structured approaches.

    Extracurricular Activities

    Consulting firms heavily weight leadership in extracurricular activities, especially for undergraduate and MBA candidates. Include:

  • Club leadership positions
  • Varsity or competitive athletics
  • Significant volunteer or community roles

  • BCG tends to value creativity and personality slightly more. Bain emphasizes results and teamwork. Tailor your language accordingly.
