Throughout my job search, I've seen a variety of things, with 3000+ applications. Workday isn't 75% of the ATS market. I checked 337 companies.

If you have read about applicant tracking systems, there's the claim: Workday runs hiring, and a few vendors own the market.

An earlier version of my own dataset put Workday at 75.4% of large employers, with the top three vendors at 93.5%. However, I went and looked at the actual companies, and Workday is around 41%.

Why my number was wrong

The first version of that dataset wasn't really researched. I had an LLM compile it from public info and I didn't check the companies one by one. When I finally went back and verified each employer against its real careers page, I noticed that about half the rows were wrong.

When the model didn't know what a company used, it said "Workday." Why? Because Workday is the most common answer.

As a result, I threw the guesses out and checked them properly.

You can check any company yourself

Click Apply on a careers page and watch where it sends you. For instance,

  • myworkdayjobs.com is Workday
  • boards.greenhouse.io is Greenhouse
  • jobs.lever.co is Lever
  • icims.com is iCIMS
  • oraclecloud.com (look for /hcmUI/) is Oracle
  • successfactors.com is SAP SuccessFactors
  • jobs.ashbyhq.com is Ashby
  • I did this for 337 of the 743 companies in the dataset and:

  • Workday, 41%. Still the biggest and still the one most worth knowing.
  • Greenhouse, 17%. The default in venture-backed tech.
  • SAP SuccessFactors, 7%.
  • Oracle (Cloud Recruiting plus the old Taleo), 7%. Banks, hospitals, old-line employers.
  • Proprietary internal systems, 5%. The Apples and Googles rolling their own.
  • Then: iCIMS 4.5%, Eightfold 4%, Taleo 4%, SmartRecruiters 3%, Avature 2%, Lever 2%, Ashby 2%.
  • I think it's important because each of these parses a resume a little differently. They weight keywords differently, they mess up on different things, so the same resume will perform differently.

337 of 743 are verified. I'm working through them, but a smaller honest number than a big wrong one is more helpful than not.

If it's useful: a free checker scores your resume against whatever ATS a given company runs, and the verified data is open if you want to pull it apart yourself. Thanks.
