Why ATS market share numbers disagree

Because they measure different populations, and almost nobody says which. Among 704 large employers verified against their live careers portal, Workday leads at 37.9%. Elsewhere you will see Greenhouse at 49%. Both can be measured correctly and still disagree by thirty points, because one sample is enterprise and the other is startups. You can watch it happen below in a single dataset.

Top three combined: 60.1% — not the “90%+” often repeated.

Nothing changes but the sample frame. Greenhouse overtakes Workday — which is why a startup-weighted source reports Greenhouse in the lead and is not wrong to.

What our number is not

This is a curated set of large employers, not a random sample of any population. Every row was checked; which rows are in the set was not. So 37.9% is Workday’s share of this set, and it would be wrong to read it as a share of all employers, all job postings, or all applications. It is also not a revenue or seat-count figure — it counts employers, and Workday’s customers are larger on average than Greenhouse’s, so a seat-weighted number would be higher still.

Provenance is mixed and published per row. Of 738 employers, 704 are verified and 551 carry the apply host an application lands on, which you can open yourself. 187 rows carry no evidence artifact at all and 156 of those are still flagged verified — the softest part of the data, and the first thing you should press on.

What is Workday's ATS market share?

Among 704 large employers verified against their live careers portal, Workday runs 267 of them — 37.9%. That is the most of any single vendor and it is not a majority. The figure describes large employers specifically; in a startup-weighted sample Greenhouse leads instead.

Why do published ATS market share numbers disagree so much?

Because they measure different populations and rarely say so. A roster of 'top-rated employers' or fast-growing companies skews toward startups and tech, where Greenhouse and Ashby lead. A Fortune 500 / Global 2000 frame skews enterprise, where Workday leads. Both can be measured correctly and still disagree by 30 points. Neither is wrong; the sample frame is the answer.

Which ATS market share number should I use?

Match the sample to your question. Selling into enterprise HR, or advising a candidate applying to a Fortune 500 employer? Use the large-employer figures. Building for startups or Series A-C companies? Use a startup-weighted source, where Greenhouse's share is far higher. Ask any source what population it measured before quoting it.
