Workday is the single most-used applicant tracking system in 2026 — but it runs hiring at 38.6% of large employers, not 75%. The famous number was never counted. It was repeated until it sounded true.
Three more things the advice gets wrong
The top three — Workday, Greenhouse, SAP SuccessFactors — cover 60.0% of verified large employers, not the near-total the "triopoly" story implies. About 40% is a long tail no three-vendor claim accounts for.

30 distinct ATS platforms turned up across the verified set, and 29 employers — Amazon, Meta, Google, Microsoft — use no third-party ATS at all. “Just optimize for Workday” isn't a strategy.

We inspected the apply-URL host of each company's live careers portal in June 2026 — 713 of 743 confirmed that way, the rest left unverified rather than guessed. The full dataset is open and MIT-licensed, so you don't have to take our word for it: check any row yourself. We'd rather publish a verified 38.6% than repeat a rounder-sounding myth.
